Dec 04,  · The Brandenburg Concertos find their foremost exponent in Karl Richter and these recordings leave one in little doubt that J. S. Bach was a genius and the greatest composer of the Baroque era. It is hard to believe that the Margrave of Brandenburg's orchestra failed to perform these sublime concertos/5(22).

Between and , Bach assembled six concertos for Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of Brandenburg, either on commission or as a job application. The Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 may have been one of the last to be written, and it certainly seems like a special-occasion piece.

Even older Bach recordings -- such as Stokowski's concupiscent readings -- have come back into vogue, and Menuhin's versions are in no way less than competent musically, with the well-drilled Bath Festival Orchestra executing snappy, subtle phrasing at very brisk tempos (sample the rapid-fire Badinerie in the Suite No. 2 for orchestra in B minor).

Menuhin and his Bath Festival group do not use exactly 'period' instruments as we would understand the term these days, but the continuo, including the big keyboard solo part in # 5, is naturally done on the harpsichord, there are recorders not transverse flutes in # 4, and Menuhin uses a 'kit' or 'piccolo' violin, tuned a third higher than the /5(10).
